UNIT TITLE: SYNERGY UNLEASHED
MYP 1
Hello teachers! I want to share with you an exciting new unit called “Synergy Unleashed” that I created during COVID-19 time. In this unit, students get to explore different sports like Basketball, Handball, Soccer, and Volleyball. Even though we were apart, this unit helps us feel connected and work together. So, let’s dive in and have an awesome time discovering new sports and skills in “Synergy Unleashed”!

Global context: Identities and Relationships Area of Exploration Well-being
Statement of Inquiry: Effective communication can be used to promote significant movement, interaction, and well-being.
Inquiry questions:
Factual — What is communication? What is movement? What is the difference between communication and interaction?
Conceptual — How can you identify communication? How is it possible to develop well-being through communication?
Debatable — Is there a way we can assess good communication?
Objectives
Criterion A: Knowing and understanding
i. Outline physical and health education factual, procedural and conceptual knowledge
ii. Identify physical and health education knowledge to describe issues and solve problems set in familiar and unfamiliar situations
iii. Apply physical and health terminology to communicate understanding.
Criterion D: Reflecting and improving performance
i. Identify and demonstrate strategies to enhance interpersonal skills
ii. Describe the effectiveness of a plan based on the outcome
iii. Describe and summarize performance.
Summative assessment
Outline of summative assessment task(s) including assessment criteria:
GOAL: Show an understanding of how effective communication can be used to promote significant movement, interaction, and well-being.
ROLE: You are an athlete
AUDIENCE: The target audience is people in your community.
SITUATION: You are an athlete and you are willing to promote well-being in your community through sports by teaching and making them reflect on their sports habits. Communication will be your key to promoting significant movements and interactions among the community and achieving your goal of having an active community that enjoys sports.
PRODUCT:
- You will create a tutorial teaching them how to play the sport you choose to work with. Criteria A
- You will write, and record a video or audio reflecting on your performance, according to to Criteria D
STANDARDS: Your work will be judged by Criteria A and D
Relationship between summative assessment task(s) and statement of inquiry:
The assessment task requires the learners to create a tutorial talking about how to play a sport that they will choose to promote wellbeing in their community and reflect on their performance. The statement of inquiry is about showing an understanding of how effective communication can be used to promote significant movement, interaction, and well-being. The relationship is based on the fact that the learner will create resources that will benefit the community by promoting their wellbeing, and these resources can be seen as a way of communicating with the community and ensuring interactions among them.

Content
- Atls: Communication and social skills
- History of Basketball, Handball, soccer, and Volleyball.
- Basic skills of each sport.
- Ways of communication in the sport.
- What is required to be able to improve in any sport?
- How can we assess our improvement?
Learning Process
Learning experiences and teaching strategies
- Atls will be introduced to the students. Communication and social skills can help promote well-being in a community. How can sharing our knowledge with others help them promote their well-being?
- The learners will learn about four sports that involve a ball, focusing on when they were introduced and how they got to their current level. What are the main historical aspects of each sport? How were communication and social skills important in the development of this sport?
- The learners will choose one of the four sports that are being learned in the unit and research the basic skills that are crucial to being able to play the sport. And they will choose an area to improve in the chosen sport. They will identify different ways of communicating that can be used while they are playing.
- The teacher will provide a certain number of sessions to allow learners to create a program in order to improve on their chosen sport and create a tutorial that will be beneficial for the community.
- The learners will assess their performance, following the criteria.
Formative assessment
- The teacher provides written feedback on students work and will provide additional information for a better understanding of the lesson.
- Students will write an essay about the history of the sport they choose to work with. (CriterionA)
- And reflect on how communication played an important role in the development of the sport. (criteria D)
- The learners will describe the basic elements of the sport they will choose to work with and share their understanding of how communication can help improve skills and promote well-being.
Differentiation
- Students will be free to use different forms of support depending on their preference (video presentation, written document, oral audio…
- For Criteria A, they will choose which way to do the tutorial.
- For criteria D, they will choose how they will present their reflection, which can be written, Audio, or video ….
